MANILA—A 14-year-old from Davao City became the first member of Lea Salonga's team in the second season of "The Voice Teens," thanks to a little assist from coach apl.de.ap, who "blocked" Sarah Geronimo.
Pia Banga, who joined the competition to help pay off her family's debts, was the second four-chair turner of the night, but the decision from apl.de.ap meant that she could not pick Geronimo as her coach.
The new "block mechanic" was introduced in this new season, which debuted Saturday, giving each coach the power to bar fellow coaches from recruiting promising singers into their teams.
Geronimo quipped that she has never been this "angry" before in the show as she really wanted Banga to join her team because of how she nailed the most difficult note of Celine Dion's "The Power of Love."
"Minsan lang ako magalit pero grabe iyong kanina," Geronimo joked, after apl.de.ap apologized for his move to block her.
The Black Eyed Peas star explained that Banga was sure to pick Geronimo as her voice fits the pop star's genre. He said that he wants Banga to challenge herself and learn from the other coaches.
This got the support of Salonga, who funnily noted that the team of Geronimo has won four of the seven seasons so far: "Naka-ilang panalo na iyan, huwag kang mag-sorry sa kanya."
In the end, it was Salonga who benefited the most from apl.de.ap's block as Banga chose the Broadway star to be her coach.
