A "Tawag ng Tanghalan" daily winner's goal is to unseat the defending champion for a chance to clinch a slot in the semifinals.
While that was the case for Dan Kristoffer Ferrer, the hosts and judges of "It' Showtime" couldn't help but cheer for a warmer relationship between him and Friday's defending champion, Janine Berdin.
Judges noticed that during Berdin's performance of "Jar of Hearts," she would look occasionally at Ferrer at the side of the stage, as if addressing to him the lyrics about a man who breaks hearts with no remorse.
Toward the end of the song, Berdin had the judges on their feet with her soaring notes. But Mitoy Yonting, apparently amused with the connection between Berdin and Ferrer, gestured the defending champion to close her performance with another look at her challenger.
She did just that, and even pointed at Ferrer.
The moment had hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis cheering for the two after the back-to-back performance.
"Nakakakilig kayong dalawa!" Vice Ganda said, addressing the two contestants. "Tuwang-tuwa kami sa inyong dalawa."
Curtis added: "Kinikilig ako! Puwede na lang sila maglaban buong week?"
Vice Ganda described a moment between the two that wasn't caught on camera: "Di ba usually 'pag kumakanta 'yung defending champion, makikita mo 'yung contender na parang pinagdadasal niya, 'Pumiyok ka.' Siya (Ferrer), tsini-cheer niya."
The "kilig" went as far as Vice Ganda asking Ferrer if he is single. He's not. But that didn't stop the comedian from asking them to do a good-humored romantic sing-off.
In the end, Ferrer's rendition of "Beautiful Soul" was not enough to bump off Berdin from the champion's spot, marking the third time the Visayas contender successfully clung on to the "golden microphone." A fifth time would mark her entry into the semifinals.
