MANILA — Momoland had its breakout in early 2018 with the release of the single "Bboom Bboom," which bolstered the girl group's popularity in their native South Korea and abroad. Here in the Philippines, "Bboom Bboom" was a viral hit, spawning numerous dance-cover videos and becoming a staple in almost every occasion.
But Momoland proved there was more to them than the success of "Bboom Bboom" as the members showcased their versatility, and got up close and personal with Filipino fans at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City Friday night.
Cheers erupted inside the Big Dome as soon as the members — sans leader Hyebin who was absent for undisclosed reasons — kicked off the two-hour fan meet with "Welcome to Momoland," followed by their debut single "JJan! Koong! Kwang!"
Cute and energetic songs such as "Bingo Game" and "Freeze" sparked excitement among the crowd while mellow B-sides "Curious" and "Only One You" brought calm, allowing the members to show off their vocal abilities.
As a way of thanking Filipino fans for their "passionate" support, Momoland aptly sang "Salamat" by Yeng Constantino.
For unit performances, Taeha and Ahin were vocal goddesses as they sang "I Want You and I Need You," which they recorded for the Korean drama "Cross"; Yeonwoo, Jane and Nayun showed their seductive sides with "Something" by Girl's Day; while Nancy, Daisy and JooE wowed with their cover of 2NE1's sleek "Can't Nobody."
Filipino fans also got to know more about the members through a special segment where the members' candid photos were shown and they were asked to share the stories behind the photos.
Taeha, for instance, revealed she made a wish during the New Year for Momoland fans to have a happy and healthy 2019 after a photo of her apparently making the wish at a beach was shown.
The girls also did a back-to-back performance of "Bboom Bboom" and its succeeding single "BAAM," and an encore with Camila Cabello's "Havana."
The night ended with the girls spending some five minutes — with "Bboom Bboom" and "Baam" on replay — interacting with the crowd near the stage. The members greeted the fans, received their gifts and even took their phones to record videos or snap selfies.
Momoland first visited the country in August 2018 for an "exclusive and private event." The group returned in December for an event sponsored by a local multi-level marketing company and a mini concert in Ilocos Sur.
