MANILA - Truth ties loose ends at the conclusion of the drama series starring Jessy Mendiola as the Philippines' "Maria Mercedes."

Aired January 24, the final episode of ABS-CBN adaptation of the hit Mexican series saw several characters come to terms with reality and their mistakes, while demonstrating the delusions love can bring about.

Failing to accept the fact that Luis (Jake Cuenca) has already married the woman he loves, an enraged Misty (Nikki Gil) embarks on a scheme to kill off the pregnant Mercedes (Mendiola).

Left alone after her husband was tricked, Mercedes then finds herself at gunpoint, trying to convince the delusional Misty to put down the gun. One pull of the trigger later, Misty is seen flat on the floor after being shot by Malvina (Velez), the mother-in-law of Mercedes.

In a poignant moment, Malvina then asks Mercedes for forgiveness despite the latter's knee-jerk resentment. Mercedes, however, goes on to forgive Malvina, absolving her of the hateful actions she committed against her in the past.

"Kahit ikulong pa nila ako habang buhay, nakuha ko na ang kalayaan ko Mercedes. Pinalaya mo ako ng patawad mo," Malvina says, shortly before Luis and the police arrive.

Years later, Mercedes is seen enjoying her married life with Luis. The two then recall the moment they first met, playfully teasing each other with vivid memories. Angela, their daughter, then enters the scene sporting the signature red dress of Mercedes.

Meanwhile, Misty, having survived the gunshot, is in asylum. Unable to grasp the reality of her unrequited love for Luis, she repeatedly murmurs, "Please tell Luis, I love him, very much."

"The Legal Wife," the drama series starring Angel Locsin and Maja Salvador, will replace the timeslot vacated by "Maria Mercedes" starting January 27.

Directed by Rory Quintos and Dado Lumibao, "The Legal Wife" also stars Jericho Rosales, JC de Vera, Mark Gil, Rio Locsin, and Christopher de Leon.
