MANILA, Philippines - He's one of the senator-judges in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona but this has not prevented Sen. Manuelito "Lito" Lapid from going back to his first love: acting.

On Tuesday, Lapid inked a contract to do a teleserye on ABS-CBN.

In an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Lapid appealed to public to understand his decision to go back to acting. He said the project was offered to him even before the impeachment trial started.

"Nagkataon lang ito. Matagal na ito, kaya lang pumasok ang impeachment kaya nagkasabay lang. Sana ay huwag namang bigyan ng masamang kahulugan na may impeachment, nagta-trabaho ka eh kailangan lang ng kayod, ng trabaho," Lapid said.

"Kami naman ay trabaho lang ng trabaho. Malinis naman ito at marangal," he added.

Lapid vowed that his work as an actor would not affect his work as a senator.

"Dati ko na namang ginagawa showbiz at politics. Noong governor pa ako. Maa-adjust naman ang schedule pero siyempre priority pa din ang impeachment. Kung walang impeachment, pwedeng mag-dalawang araw o tatlong araw (na taping)," he said.

New Kapamilya star

Lapid inked a contract with ABS-CBN Tuesday, just hours before the impeachment trial resumed at the Senate.

Present during the signing were ABS-CBN's executives including president Charo Santos-Concio.

"Isang karangalan para maging Kapamilya ako at binigyan nga ako ng role na nakikita nilang bagay ako dahil may kabayo kasi," Lapid joked, referring to his famous role as "Leon Guerrero."

He also said it would be his first time to act on television.

"First time kong magti-TV kasi noong araw, kami na lang ni FPJ (Fernando Poe Jr. ) ang hindi nagti-TV eh. Wala na siya, at least hindi ko na masasabi na hindi ako nagti-TV kasi nandito na ako," he said.

He added: "Medyo tumatanda na tayo. Baka nakalimutan na tayo ng tao, at ang exposure ay maganda dito ‘yung TFC sa States.”

Lapid said he will play a mentor role in the teleserye with the working title "The Little Champ."

"'The Little Champ' parang ako ang magtuturo sa bata. Parang style Jackie Chan. Ito ay teleserye na pambata," he said.

Aside from the TV project, Lapid is also hoping he can do a a film under ABS-CBN's movie outfit Star Cinema.

"Sana mabigyan ako ng ABS-CBN na makagawa ng pelikula dito, para Star Cinema."

Asked which female star he would like to have as his leading lady, the senator replied: "Ako hindi ako namimili kung sino ang bagay sa role. Bahala na ang producer at director."
