MANILA - Actress Jessy Mendiola said she would be honored to suit up as Darna should the role of the iconic Filipino superheroine be formally offered to her.

In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com on Wednesday, Mendiola, who is currently one of the leads in the late night drama "You're My Home," admitted that it has always been her dream to become an action star.

"It's really nice that people are rooting for me," she said, referring to the public clamor for her to take on the role of the comic book character first popularized by Mars Ravelo.

The 22-year-old Mendiola is one of the actresses rumored to replace Angel Locsin for the planned Star Cinema adaptation, alongside prime time stars Liza Soberano and Nadine Lustre.

In an interview on DZMM last Saturday, film director Erik Matti said Mendiola has the "built" to play the role, which has been portrayed by the likes of Marian Rivera and Vilma Santos.

"Si Jessy has the built. Maputi lang siya masyado. Personal ko ito na comment ha, hindi ito comment ng ABS-CBN. Maputi lang masyado si Jessy. Pinay dapat," Matti said.

Asked to comment on Matti's opinion, Mendiola said: "I just find it funny that people are looking at the character based on skin color."

Meanwhile, Mendiola's co-star JC de Vera, in the same interview, expressed his support for his onscreen partner.

De Vera said that he has no problem with Mendiola being Darna.

"No bias, pero we believe in her," he added.
