MANILA—Now it can be said: Star Cinema’s entries to the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) led the weeks-long box-office race, an official of the ABS-CBN film arm announced Wednesday.
On Twitter, Star Cinema executive Roxy Liquigan listed the rankings of the film fest's top earners. Ranking first is “Gandarrapido: The Revenger Squad” starring Vice Ganda, followed by “Ang Panday” starring Coco Martin. Both were co-productions of Star Cinema.
In third place is “Siargao,” which won several awards, including 2nd Best Picture, while in fourth is “Haunted Forest,” Regal Films’ horror entry. The rankings of the other four film entries – “Ang Larawan”, “Meant to Beh”, “All Of You”, and “Deadma Walking” – were not specified.
The organizing committee of the MMFF had withheld announcing the box-office rankings of the films during the festival run, saying such a list might affect audience preference.
“Gandarrapido,” which was directed by Joyce Bernal and co-starred Daniel Padilla and Pia Wurtzbach, had already earned P540 million as of January 9 after 3 weeks in theaters. No updated figure has been released.
Vice Ganda, meanwhile, hinted at the possibility of a sequel to the superhero comedy film, saying there is still much to explore about the characters introduced in “Gandarrapido”.
