MANILA – Film Development Council of the Philippines chairperson Liza Diño encouraged everyone to focus on Maxine Medina’s strength as she attempts to bring home another Miss Universe title for the Philippines later this month.

Her plea came amid the online bashing the Filipina beauty queen is receiving because of her poor English language skills.

“Focus on her strength. Hindi nya kailangang piliting magpakabihasa sa Ingles para lang magkaroon ng edge para manalo,” Diño said in a Facebook post.

As a suggestion, Diño added: “Bakit hindi kumuha ng translator para mas malaya nyang masasagot ang mga tanong?”

“We should celebrate her! Hindi kahinaan ang hindi kabihasaan sa Ingles!”

Last week, Medina’s language trainer took to social media his disappointment with the online bashing that the beauty queen gets.

Mark Arthur Payumo Abalos, an English language training specialist who claims to have worked closely with Medina, said in a Facebook post that Medina has improved well during their seven-month training.

He urged critics to change their ways and support Medina instead. After all, she is carrying the name of the Philippines in the 65th Miss Universe pageant.
