MANILA - Besting older contenders and drawing inspiration from an ailing sister, a 15-year-old from Metro Manila took the "Tawag ng Tanghalan" golden mic Saturday as the hit "It's Showtime" singing tilt opened its fourth season.
Daphny Mandin from Quezon City beat Albay's Mario Cano, Bicol's Davin Valeroso, and Mindanao's Junbert Nuevo to be the first to take the golden mic.
Singing Aretha Franklin's 1967 hit "(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman," Mandin got the crowd clapping - with hurado Ogie Alcasid continuing the applause well after the performance had ended.
Hurado Karla Garcia called the "hard" song selection a "good choice" for Mandin.
"Na-perform mo kasi nang maayos. Ine-expect ko na, alam mo 'yon, na millennial [song] ang kakantahin mo, and I am very happy na kinanta mo iyan," Garcia said after the performance.
Mandin, who has been singing competitively since age 8, said she uses her cash prizes for her older sister, who has a hard time speaking.
She also bared wanting to become a nurse later on to support her older sister.
