With a career in the limelight, and especially in the age of social media, local stars are forced to navigate going public with a new flame, and, on the flip side, confirming the end of a romantic relationship.
“It’s my private life,” were the words of actor Gerald Anderson in his first interview about his supposed “ghosting” of former girlfriend and fellow Star Magic artist Bea Alonzo.
While that is indeed the case, celebrities are inevitably confronted with personal questions when they face the cameras, whether specifically intended to address a controversy, or as a side topic to the promotion of a new project.
In 2019, this cycle came to the fore: rumors and blind items surface, and a week or two later, the celebrity subject addresses the separation.
In videos, here’s a look at how some stars answered questions about their breakup in the past year:
CATRIONA GRAY AND CLINT BONDAD
What Gray said in February: “When you’re together for so long, and you start off from a very young age, you grow, whether that be in your personal [life] or in your career. Sometimes, you outgrow each other in a way.”
JULIA BARRETTO AND JOSHUA GARCIA
What they said in June: “For now, babalik muna kami sa pinagsimulan namin. We’re now best of friends. We managed to be the bestest of friends and if the fans are worried, we can assure them that there is nothing to worry about. JoshLia is very much alive.”
GERALD ANDERSON AND BEA ALONZO
What Alonzo said in July: “To my understanding, we did not break up. He just started not talking to me.”
What Anderson said in August: “Kahit naging ganito ‘yung ending namin, it doesn’t define what we had. I will never forget ‘yung mga good moments namin na we had together. It was a lot of good moments.”
HEAVEN PERALEJO AND JIMUEL PACQUIAO
What Peralejo said in August: “Sabi nga ni mommy, ‘Don’t let anyone ever make you feel that you are not enough, because you are.’ ‘Pag nangyari ‘yun, it’s time to let it go.”
SUE RAMIREZ AND JOAO COSTANCIA
What Ramirez said in September: “Mahirap, siyempre, [kasi] nasanay ka na nandiyan ‘yung tao, pero ang daming differences kasi. Marami kaming bagay na hindi napagkakasunduan. We really wanted it to work, pero, ‘pag hindi po talaga, hindi po talaga, e.”
NATHALIE HART AND HER DAUGHTER’S FATHER
What Hart said in December: “It wasn’t working. It wasn’t a happy home. It’s better for us to have separate lives for my daughter to have a happy environment. I’m still healing. I just thought ito ‘yung tao para sa akin talaga… I wanted to be respected, I wanted to be loved the way I love that person. Gusto ko ganoon, e, pero hindi ganoon ‘yung nakikita ko.”
JOEM BASCON AND HIS GIRLFRIEND OF 8 YEARS
What Bascon said in December: “Hanggang doon na lang siya. Kapag pinilit pa, on my side siguro mas magiging magulo. So I guess hanggang doon ko lang talaga kaya.”
