Amid an increasing demand for live video services, Twitter is strengthening its position in the same segment as it launches a new live streaming app for several platforms, all aimed at distributing live videos on otherwise non-traditional platforms.
The free apps would be available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Microsoft Xbox One. According to the company, the apps would feature live streams of online shows like NFL Thursday Night Football games, MLB Advanced Media, NBA, Pac 12 Networks, Campus Insiders, Cheddar and Bloomberg News.
The apps would also distribute other Twitter content such as top Tweets and top global Vines and Periscopes.
Apple TV would get some exclusive material such as live premium videos. The company noted that the app on Apple TV would have side-by-side video interface.
While Twitter wants to push its live stream functions to a wider audience, these recently launched free apps would be available only to a select market.
For one, Twitter on Xbox One will be available only in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the US and the UK. Twitter for Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are only for the US and UK markets.
Fortunately, users of Apple TV anywhere in the world would be able to acquire the Twitter app on the App Store.
Social has been a battleground for live streaming with Facebook leading the pack with its Facebook Live. Others include YouTube, Vimeo and Twitter, which has Periscope.
