MANILA - Adrian Cristobal Jr. has been appointed secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Malacanang said on Tuesday.
Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said that according to Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., President Aquino appointed Cristobal as ad interim secretary of Trade and Industry effective December 31, 2015.
"A transmittal letter has been sent to the Commission on Appointments," Coloma said.
The appointment is ad interim since Congress is in recess.
Cristobal first joined government as the Special Assistant to the secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) from 1991 to 1994.
In August 2010, he joined the Aquino administration as DTI undersecretary for international trade.
He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, and his Juris Doctor of Laws at the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines.
Cristobal replaced former Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo, who filed his resignation in September.
Domingo agreed to stay in office until after the country's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting in November.
Domingo earlier recommended Cristobal to replace him. -- With a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
