MANILA - Seventy-nine out of 534 petitions for special permits for buses were already granted by the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

The application for special permits ended last Friday and the agency is currently evaluating the remaining applicants.

The validity of the special permits will be from December 22 to January 3. The bus operators will have to claim their special permits before December 22.

LTFRB PIO Mary Ann Salada admits that the additional buses will add to the heavy traffic this holiday season, but with the high demand for transportation in the coming weeks, they have to keep up with the number of passengers heading to the provinces.

"Walang shortage na ito. 'Yung bilang ng units na kailangan para matugunan ang pangangailangan ng passengers, 'yan ang kino-consider din natin. Kaya tayo may special permits," explained Salada.

A petition of one of the bus operators was denied due to the limited number of slots per franchise or route.
