MANILA – Taxis, buses and UV Express are now being asked to reduce fare due to lower diesel prices.

First District Negros Occidental Rep. Manuel Iway has filed for the second time a petition to reduce fares for all public utility vehicles nationwide.

Six oil companies rolled back diesel prices by as much P1.60 for diesel, P1.90 for gasoline and P1.80 for kerosene last December 14.

Oil prices have been steadily declining since June this year.

He based his petition on fare rates history, wherein last December 2008, price of diesel was P34.95 and regular provincial buses charged commuters P8.50 for the first 5 kilometers while regular buses plying Metro Manila charged passengers P9.

Since diesel prices are currently at P31.15/liter, Iway asked the board to reduce fare rates of buses nationwide by at least P2.

For taxis, he asked flagdown rates be reduced to P30 with P2.50 for every succeeding 300 kilometers.
