MANILA – Environment Secretary Gina Lopez said fish pen permits in Laguna Lake would not be renewed after they expire this month to help transform the vast body of water into an eco-tourism zone.
The 90,000-hectare lake houses around 13,000 hectares of fish pens, which, when abolished, will be limited to small fishermen, officials said.
“(The government will) convert Laguna Lake into a magnificent eco-tourism zone. It can be done,” she said.
Lopez said fish caught in the lake might not be safe since it is a catch basin for septage from 400,000 houses.
