MANILA – Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is getting ready for the potential damage that Typhoon Ruby will inflict on Metro Manila and other neighboring provinces.
Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said the utility is looking at two possible aspects of damage: toppled poles in case of strong winds and flooding if the typhoon brings heavy rains.
Zaldarriaga advised consumers to switch off the main circuit breaker in case of flooding though Meralco may also de-energize the whole line to avoid any incident of fire or electrocution.
Meralco also advised consumers to unplug appliances from wall sockets and turnoff permanently connected equipment and unscrew all light bulbs, if possible.
When the flood water subsides, remove mud and dirt from the electrical facility using rubber gloves and rubber soled shoes.
Also make sure that the wires are dry, Meralco said. When the wires are dried, get a licensed electrician to check and re-install affected lines.
Meralco said consumers can raise their concerns through text message to 09209716211, 09257716211 and 09175516211.

Generation and other charges
Zaldarriaga said consumers can expect a reduction in generation and other charges of not less than P0.10 per kilowatt hour for December.
He said Meralco may make the official announcement on Tuesday. According to Zaldarriaga, the December 2014 generation charge appears to be the lowest for this year.
