MANILA—Fifth generation, or 5G, networks will be deployed in the country by the second half of next year, officials of PLDT-Smart said on Wednesday.

Following the company's successful 5G video call test on the same day, officials of PLDT Smart told ANC's "Future Perfect Tech Shorts" that they plan to roll out the new platform in schools, techno-parks and business centers.

"On 5G it's not just about speed, it is also about greater capacity and also lower latency," said Czar Lopez, PLDT-Smart vice president of technology strategy and transformation office.

PLDT is also retrofitting its cell towers to accommodate 5G equipment, as well as adding more towers to hasten the roll out of 5G.

Mitch Locsin, first vice president and head of PLDT SME Nation, said the company is allotting about P58 billion this year and next year for capital expenditures.

"The goal really is to have that heavy investment so that consumers will benefit," said Locsin.

PLDT said its 5G test on Wednesday achieved speeds of up to 700 mbps.

Some of the possible applications for 5G are autonomous vehicles, internet-of-things, and high definition video calls.
