Previous experience in the tech industry proved to be helpful, said South China Morning Post CEO Gary Liu, as he transitioned to a new leadership role in Hong Kong's prestigious news organization.
"Coming in from a different industry, bringing in concepts that might be news -- I call them inventive but at times it might be disruptive to an existing industry, my job really is to listen first, to be able to explain why we want or we need to change and then to bring our organization along with me in this change," Liu said in an interview on ANC's The Boss.
As CEO of a major news organization, the job also involves minimizing distractions which may come in the form of business issues and external influence that could affect their journalists' "freedom to report what they see," he said.
A good boss is defined not by their ability to lead but by the willingness of the people around them to follow, said Liu when asked about his own definition of a "boss."
