MANILA -- Inflation for the bottom 30 percent of households based on income picked up to 8 percent in August, 5 percentage points higher compared to the same month last year, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed.

At that level, inflation for the poorest is now at its fastest since 2009.

September inflation print for the poor is expected to be faster compared to August because price spikes for poor households tracks the rate for all households. Note the difference in base years.

Inflation for the food, beverages and tobacco index picked up for the tenth straight month to 8.8 percent in August, the fastest since July 2014. It also nearly tripled August 2017’s rate.

Inflation in the National Capital Region accelerated by 8.3 percent in August, while inflation for areas outside NCR quickened to 8 percent.

Relative to the annual growth rates in July, faster inflation was observed across all regions in August except for Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao.
