MANILA - The public will notice a pick up in internet speeds by the third quarter of next year, as the government installs more free WiFi access points, a communications official said Tuesday.
At the same time, the government is also planning to build its own internet gateway that is independent from the 2 dominant carriers, said Eliseo Rio, officer in charge of the Department of Information and Communications Technology.
Industry monitor Speedtest said internet speeds in the Philippines improved in August following President Rodrigo Duterte's call for carriers to improve their services.
"More or less mafi-feel na ng tao pagbilis ng Internet third quarter of 2018," Rio told DZMM.

In rural areas, Rio said the government would work with Internet service providers, cable TV operators and small telcos.
