MANILA - A segment of the new tollway that will link the South Luzon Expressway to the Cavite Expressway will be opened to the public this month, the Department of Public Works and Highways said on Tuesday.

Motorists will soon be able to use the Laguna segment of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) which starts at the SLEX Mamplasan exit and ends in Silang-Tagaytay Road in Sta. Rosa, said Public Works Secretary Mark Villar.

“Hindi na kayo mata-traffic sa Sta. Rosa area kung ang pupuntahan n'yo is Tagaytay or Batangas. Pwede n'yo na gamitin itong alignment at mabilis po, at least exit nyo hindi na Sta Rosa, exit nyo Mamplasan,” Villar said.

(You no longer have to deal with the traffic in Sta. Rosa if you're going to Tagaytay or Batangas. You can now use this alignment and it's fast. At least your exit is no longer Sta. Rosa but Mamplasan.)

The 11-kilometer Laguna segment is expected to serve around 10,000 vehicles per day and decongest Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, and the Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road, the DPWH said.

CALAX is a 44.6-kilometer tollway that will link CAVITEX in Kawit, Cavite to the SLEX-Mamplasan Interchange in Biñan, Laguna. The project costs P35.43 billion and is projected to be finished by 2022.

The project will have interchanges in 9 locations, namely: Kawit, Daang Hari, Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, Silang, Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay, Laguna Blvd., Technopark, and a Toll Barrier before SLEX.

The four-lane expressway, which is being built by the toll road unit of Metro Pacific Investments Corp, will pass through congested residential and industrial areas in Kawit, Imus, Gen. Trias, Dasmariñas and Silang in Cavite; and through Sta. Rosa and Biñan in Laguna.

Once completed it is expected to cut travel time between Cavite and Laguna to 45 minutes from around 2 hours at present. Around 50,000 vehicles per day are expected to use CALAX.

Villar asked for patience from motorists over slow traffic in SLEX due to the construction of the Skyway extension.
