MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino on Friday asked businessmen to be pro-active in helping grow the economy, and not be "the proverbial Juan Tamad waiting for the coconut to fall."
Aquino was the guest of honor in the 36th Philippine Business Conference and Expoorganized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Aquino said the country's budget deficit has been "controlled" and the government has booked a surplus of P1.3 billion in August.
He also said that more jobs are underway after he brought home investments from his visit to the United States.
At the business summit, businessmen presented a 10-point agenda they hope the government will implement.
Among them are the crafting of a National Industrialization Plan, a National Infrastructure Development Plan with a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, review of the tax system, promotion of the tourism industry, and adoption of the Business Permit and Licensing System.
