MANILA, Philippines - Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras has confirmed that Luzon may plunge into brownouts on Friday after 2 major power plants bogged down.
More than 1,000 megawatts (MW) of supply were lost due to a problem in the Sual and Pagbilao plants.
System capacity is at 6,579 MW but forecasted demand is at 6,655 MW by noon, 6,690 MW by afternoon and 6,521 MW by evening.
The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) subsequently announced tentative 1-hour rotating brownouts that will affect areas in Metro Manila due to the power deficiency.
The power distributor said the brownouts will be as follows:
12 nn-1 pm (portions of Quezon City, Cavite, Las Piñas and Tondo);
1 pm-2 pm (portions of Grace Park, Caloocan City, Makati, Sampaloc, Malate, Tondo, Sta. Ana, Malabon, Cavite, Las Piñas, Bulacan and Batangas)
2 pm-3 pm (portions of Canlubang, Cubao, Quezon City, San Juan, Ermita, Malabon, Pamplona, Las Piñas, San Pedro, Tagaytay and Manila area)
3 pm-4 pm (portions of San Pablo) and,
6 pm-7 pm (portions of Sta. Mesa, Sampaloc, Binondo, Sta. Ana, Sta. Cruz Manila), - Report from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
