MANILA - The Lopez Group of Companies on Tuesday joined the business community in mourning the death of businessman and philanthropist Washington SyCip.
"His astute mind made him a pillar in corporate governance and business advisory, while his gentle heart made him a champion of education for the Filipino youth," the holdings firm said in a statement.
"His faith in the Filipino lives on in the companies he guided, and in the causes he took on. We share his commitment to uplift communities through basic, professional and livelihood training," it added.
SyCip was a director of Lopez Holdings Corporation since April 30, 1997 and he attended his last board meeting as lead independent director on October 6, 2017.
He was also a director of First Philippine Holdings Corporation since November 10, 1997 until he passed away on October 8 while on a flight from Vancouver to Manila.
SyCip remained active in the business community despite his age, as a member of the board of directors of some of the country's largest firms.
Aside from his business ventures, he also devoted time to his chosen advocacy of enabling poor Filipinos' access to education.
