MANILA, Philippines - Lawyers in the government and private sector are holding a round-table discussion this week about measures to drive banking sector growth.

The seminar, titled "What's In Store for Q4 and Beyond", was organized by the Banking Group of the Romulo Law Office and will be held in the afternoon of October 8 at the Top of the City of Citibank Tower in Makati.

Atty. Romeo Mendoza Jr., general counsel of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC), will start the discussion. His focus will be on the Close Bank Liquidation Act that PDIC is shepherding through Congress.

Mendoza will be followed by Atty. Juan de Zuniga, general counsel of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Zuniga will discuss the expansion in BSP's mandate to include oversight over the payment system and formal adoption of the tenets of macro-prudential supervision over banks.

Representing the private sector is Alfonso Banta Jr., head of Balance Sheet Management of Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. He will deal with how Basel III will impact Philippine banks.
