MANILA - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has started issuing environmental compliance certificates (ECCs) to some businesses in Boracay.
“I was told kanina that they have been already issuing ECC. Nakalagay kasi doon conditional noon. Pero ngayon nag comply na talaga. So ECC na talaga ito. Marami na ang compliant,” Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said in a press briefing Thursday.
He assured the public that Boracay will reopen on October 26 as scheduled, while its rehabilitation will continue until next year.
“Yung rehabilitation, marami kasing stages yun. Hindi pa talaga completely matapos. Tuloy-tuloy pa yan after the opening. Sa 2019 pa matatapos yan eh,” Cimatu said.
Boracay has been closed to tourists since April 26 to give way to the rehabilitation of its sewerage system and the removal of illegal structures.
This, after President Rodrigo Duterte branded the world-renowned beach destination as a "cesspool."
A congressional hearing will be held on the island Friday morning, and the inter-agency task force is scheduled to meet in the afternoon.
