MANILA - The construction of the Estrella-Pantaleon bridge has been deferred to January 2019 to avoid economic losses during the Christmas season, the Department of Public Works and Highways said Tuesday.
The public including business groups cited that the closure of the bridge could cause "possible huge economic loss" especially this coming holiday season, DPWH Project Director Virgilio Castillo said in a statement dated Sept. 24.
"We are constrained to defer the implementation of the project and decided to proceed by 1st week of January 2019," Castillo said.
The bridge linking Mandaluyong and Makati was closed Sunday to give way to the supposed Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge China Grant Aid Project. It was reopened late Monday.
"We sincerely apologized for the sudden change in plan in view of the afore-cited reasons, which we deemed appropriate to avert negative impact to the forthcoming yuletide events," DPWH said.
Twelve new bridges including the construction of a new Estrella–Pantaleon bridge were proposed under the government’s traffic management plan to further ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila, chairperson of the DPWH's Build, Build, Build Committee Anna Mae Lamentillo told DZMM radio on Monday.
