MANILA, Philippines - Netizens greeted the news of the government's study for a subway along EDSA with skepticism.

On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said a study is underway to determine the feasibility of a subway along EDSA, parallel to the existing MRT.

Employers Confederation of the Philippines president Ed Lacson said the government must first fix the drainage system along the EDSA to prevent flooding in Metro Manila before embarking on a subway project. Otherwise, commuters may need a "submarine" and not a subway, he joked.

Many netizens expressed doubt the government could even push through with the subway system. Some noted the government has not even managed to connect the LRT and MRT along EDSA - a proposal being talked about since the last years of the Arroyo administration.

On ABS-CBNnews.com's Facebook page, some netizens posted their opinions on the proposed subway along EDSA.

Benj Arrieta noted the government should address the flooding problem in Metro Manila before even considering the subway. "Subway?!? Binabaha na nga tayo, subway pa iniisip nyo! Susme," he said.

"DOTC and DPWH should first solve the insane flood problems in metro manila before even considering a subway system," Lieo Gonzaga said.

Some even said the government must address first problems of the railway transit before embarking on a major project like a subway.

"Instead of subway add more train sa MRT at LRT lalo sa rush hour. Tapos wag na bigyan ng permit ang mga bulok na jeep, taxi at bus para naman mbawasan ang mga sasakyan sa kalye. Hindi subway ang solusyon sa matinding traffic dyan sa Manila," Almira Jean Angeles said.

Others linked the issue to the misuse of government funds in the "pork barrel" scam.

"Dami plano tapusin muna si Napoles para yun makukuhang pera ipagawa ng daat at eskwelahan at mga dagdag na tren," Iñaki Mine Noguchi said.

"Transfer the Presidential Pork Barrel to transport modernization such as railway system now,"Sammy Tamayo Malunes said. - With report from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
