MANILA, Philippines - Is Metro Manila ready for a subway system?

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya on Tuesday said Metro Manila is ready for its own subway system.

He said a study to be financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency will begin soon for a north-to-south subway line along EDSA.

During the Philippine Economic Forum on Tuesday, Abaya said there is not much difference in the cost for a subway and other modes of public transport.

Asked if this subway project will materialize within President Aquino's term, Abaya said the government can lay the groundwork, but the next administration can see the logic of pursuing a subway system for EDSA.

The Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3), located along EDSA, is operating at overcapacity, causing long lines and overcrowded trains.
