MANILA - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Friday warned the public against phishing scams involving illegal telephone extortion schemes.
In a social media post, the BSP said the public should be vigilant as scammers pretend to be officials from the government demanding personal information.
"The BSP categorically denies association with these calls and assures the public that these calls are fraudulent," the statement said.
The BSP said it would never contact the public to ask for sensitive information such as credit card and online accounts details.
Investigating agencies were tapped to track down the source of the calls, it said.
Victims of such malicious scams were encouraged to report incidents to the BSP's Financial Consumer Protection Department through the hotlines 708-7087 and 708-7701 loc 2584 or through email@example.com.
