MANILA, Philippines - The president of a grains trader federation whom the Senate cited for contempt and arrested for supposedly lying in a rice smuggling probe was released on Thursday.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said senators accepted the explanation of Cesar Ramirez that his statements were inconsistent because he was nervous during the hearing of the Senate agriculture committee.
"We just want to show them that they cannot continue lying," Enrile said.
At a hearing, Ramirez denied that he was communicating with Protik Guha, an Indian rice importer, via e-mail. But Guha later told senators that he and Ramirez were e-mailing each other.
The Senate also orderd Guha's arrest but he is already in India.
