MANILA - PLDT Inc and Globe Telecom said Tuesday they rerouted data traffic after 2 successive typhoons tripped an undersea cable system in Hong Kong and slowed internet connections in the country.

Repair works on the damaged cable could take up to 3 weeks, said PLDT spokesman Ramon Isberto.

Isberto said the damage had particularly affected gaming portals and social media networks.

"To alleviate this situation, we've used alternate routes to the affected sites and applications," Isberto said.

Globe Telecom issued a separate statement saying it also rerouted its data connection.

PLDT over the weekend apologized to subscribers over the slow internet connection. -- with a report from Warren De Guzman, ABS-CBN News
