Many entrepreneurs feel that 24 hours in a day is not enough. Thus they tend to work longer hours cramming, and neglect to have time for themselves and their families.
Having a business means facing a ton of work, and sometimes, you just don’t feel like there’s time rest.
Time is very important. In business, you need to create a timeline on the things that need to be done. This will act as your guide, otherwise, you may end up wasting time doing unnecessary things and making wrong decisions.
At least half of startups fail in the first five years. One of the most common mistakes that some entrepreneurs make is not properly managing their time.
TIME MANAGEMENT MISTAKES
Time management is important because it allows us the freedom to enjoy the fruits of our labor, and do other things instead of being tied to one task.
Avoid these time management mistakes and be able to create a stress-free day all the time.
Not knowing what to prioritize
Make a list of the tasks that you need to do for the day. Make two columns, on one side write down “IMPORTANT” and on the other side “URGENT”.
This allows you to do the urgent tasks first followed by the rest, which you need to accomplish for the day. Other tasks that are not as important for you personally can always be delegated to any of your employees.
Not recognizing time management issues
You may think that you have everything figured out, but it is always possible that you may have missed something and failed to do a certain task because you were too busy with other things.
You can’t always complain that you don’t have enough time. If you had just set out your priorities, you could have finished your work on time without feeling stressed.
Not getting enough sleep
I am also guilty of overworking, especially if I have a presentation the following day. However, not having enough sleep could make you feel tired the next day. No matter how many cups of coffee you take, it’s not the same as the energy from having an 8-hour sleep.
It also helps when you get to sleep early so you can wake up early as well. This way, you get things done earlier and you can relax earlier, too.
Taking all the responsibilities
While being hands-on in your business is ideal, it can also cause you a lot of stress. Your decision is always important, but you don’t need to personally do all the tasks. Learn to delegate. Choose the right people to do the job so you don’t have to worry that the tasks are not done on time. So hire only the best people.
Not having “free time” for yourself during the day
Remember that God created the world in 6 days and had to rest on the 7th day. It’s the same for us. We cannot be working 24/7. Apart from affecting our health, working too much can lead us to make wrong decisions because of lack of rest/sleep.
We tend to be grumpier which can scare away both employees and clients. At the office, spare an hour or two for yourself. You may use the time to take a nap or do meditation. This would help your body heal and allows your mind to think more clearly.
Having a chaotic workplace
How can you do things on time when you waste precious minutes searching for the things you need? Always have a clean and orderly workplace so that you can find the things you need to use like pens, worksheets, contracts, etc.
Learn to estimate how much time you need for each task. Sometimes, we fail to understand how long it takes to do one job. When this happens, we cram and make poor decisions.
Decision-making should not be rushed. An entrepreneur should also have a back-up plan just in case the first one fails.
Create a time management plan and an environment that will allow you to work and still come home to have dinner with your family.
