MANILA - The first phase of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Expressway is expected to open in the third week of September.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) promises faster travel time around the NAIA complex as they fast-track the completion of NAIA Expressway Phase II, which will connect the airport terminals to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx), Cavite Expressway, and Macapagal Boulevard.
The first section of the NAIA Expressway connects NAIA Terminal 1 to Macapagal Avenue and PAGCOR's Entertainment City.
The second section, which will connect NAIA Terminals 1 and Terminal 3 to SLEx, is targeted to be finished by December, completing the four-lane, 7.15-kilometer elevated expressway.
The whole stretch consists of 16 ramps with four toll plazas. Toll fee is estimated at P35-P45 for the whole stretch.
The NAIA Expressway project was supposed to be completed in time for the APEC Summit last November 2015, but right-of-way issues and the transfer of water, telecommunications and power infrastructure pushed back the P17.9 billion road project.
The expressway is seen to reduce average travel time between Skyway/SLEx and NAIA Terminal 1 from approximately 24.3 minutes to 8.2 minutes and will benefit 80,000 travelers per day.
The project was approved in 2012. It was awarded to conglomerate San Miguel Corporation through its subsidiary and concession firm Vertex Tollways Development Inc.
