MANILA - The government is preparing financial assistance for farmers affected by bird flu in Pampanga province, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said Monday.

Farmers can avail of a P5,000 grant and P20,000 loan, Piñol said, adding alternative jobs were also being considered.

"Kung kailangan pa nila ng additional financing (If additional financing is needed), we will facilitate a financing package for the farmers so they can start all over again," Piñol told reporters.

The department and the local governments of Pampanga province and San Luis town have also agreed to pay the farmers whose fowls will be slaughtered P80 per head, he said.

"I really believe that government should come in and assist the farmers here because devastating yung effect nito, not only for the farmers in San Luis, but for the farmers of Pampanga as well," said Piñol.

The department earlier banned the shipment of fowls from Luzon to other parts of the country to contain the virus in San Luis town.
