MANILA - The Aboitiz Group on Monday said it will rehabilitate one of Boracay's wetlands after signing a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Natural Resources (DENR).
The group said in a statement it adopted Wetland 4, a one hectare lagoon in Brgy. Balabag, Boracay Island through the agreement between the DENR and the Aboitiz Foundation.
“The Aboitiz Group fully supports the thrust of the DENR and the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force to rehabilitate the island, in order to ensure the area’s sustainability and prevent further degradation of its rich ecosystem," Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc chief operating officer Sabin Aboitiz said.
Wetland 4 will be converted into a "linear urban park" in a project spanning 3 years starting 2018, Aboitiz Group said.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu has said the government will restore all 9 wetlands of Boracay.
