MANILA -- Water distributor Manila Water, which grappled with a supply shortage earlier this year, said Friday its board elected a new president and CEO.

Manila Water said Jose Rene Almendras will replace Ferdinand dela Cruz as president, CEO and chief sustainability officer effective Sept. 1. Dela Cruz resigned effective Aug. 31.

Before he joined former President Benigno Aquino's cabinet in 2010, Almendras was Manila Water president and COO from March 30, 2009. During his watch, the Ayala-led distributor achieved a 100-percent customer satisfaction rating.

Tens of thousands in Metro Manila's east zone served by Manila Water endured prolonged service interruptions and rationing last summer. In congressional hearings, Dela Cruz apologized to customers.
