MANILA, Philippines -- SM Malls president Annie Garcia denied there are penalties imposed on mall tenants who failed to open on Tuesday as heavy rains caused flooding in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces.

In a statement, Garcia said SM malls are open for both employees and customers, who were affected by the continuous rains and floods.

"There are no penalties for SM tenants who do not open their shops today, as SM realizes the gravity of the weather situation. In fact, SM has opened its malls for their employees and families and customers, who are affected by the floods," she said.

SM has also allowed tenants and customers to use its parking areas free of charge.

The event center of SM Megamall, located in Ortigas, has also been turned into a relief drop-off center for those who want to help flood victims.

SM Malls and SM Foundation are also working to distribute relief goods to the flood victims.
