MANILA - Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade on Friday signed an order that would permanently allow the use of hatchback and sub-compact cars to operate under ride-hailing platforms, his office said.

On Thursday, Tugade ordered the Land Transportation and Regulatory Board to implement a Memorandum Circular allowing the use of hatchbacks as TNVS or Transport Vehicle Network Service after consultations with drivers and stakeholders.

The LTFRB previously de-listed hatchback cars from vehicles allowed to operate as TNVS.

Some driver groups earlier threatened to go offline for a "transport holiday" to protest against LTFRB's policies, which include the lengthy process of getting permits and the ban on hatchbacks.

Senator Grace Poe, who chairs the Committee on Public Services, praised Tugade’s “sound judgement” in directing the LTFRB to adhere to existing regulation that permits the use of hatchbacks in ride-hailing.

“This is a positive step towards resolving the issues surrounding TNVS operation. We laud the vigilance of the TNVS drivers and operators, who have steadfastly fought for their right to equity,” Poe said in a statement.
