MANILA, Philippines - The government is looking at the possibility of coming up with a "national procurement" system where office supplies, even airline tickets, for various agencies would be bought in bulk to generate savings.

"The suggestion was to buy in bulk because we understand from Budget Secretary Butch Abad that we can in fact generate savings of about 35%," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.

The suggestion was made when the Cabinet met for the mid-year budget execution assessment yesterday.

Lacierda said the government will also study the possibility of availing special rates for government cellphone users.

He said Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas will talk to airline companies about the discounted rates for government employees' official trips.
