MANILA -- Southeast Asian cities should build their own models for "smart cities" rather than follow the lead of developed nations, a consultant said Tuesday.

Urbanization in the region is "very different" given the "outsized contribution" of Southeast Asian cities to their respective countries' economies, said Mukund Sridhar, a partner at McKinsey and Co in Singapore.

Clark City in the Philippines offers a "very unique model" with structures built under the public-private partnership scheme, Sridhar said.
