Business Mentor: Time management mistakes that affect your life

Have you ever felt that 24 hours in a day just aren’t enough for everything that you need to do? When due to lack of time, you failed to beat the deadline and made your superiors furious with you? Or you forgot to attend a very important event?

Having this happen each and every day can be stressful and demoralizing. But before we can make things right, we should pinpoint where we failed. When we are able to recognize these mistakes, it will be easier for us to provide a solution.

Not setting goals

Have you thought about where you would like your business to be in 6 months, 1 year or even in 10 years? If you have not thought about this, then it’s time for you to start setting your personal goals.

This is very important because it allows you to manage your time well. You will have a clear vision of your destination and come up with ideas on how to start. When you know what you want, you can prioritize tasks, set a schedule for each task and also be able to gather resources that you need to reach your goals.

Entertaining distractions

You need to focus on what you need to do. The internet is a powerful tool, but unfortunately, with the popularity of the various social networking sites, it can also be a source of distractions. We spend almost two hours just checking out Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. And we sometimes lose track of time viewing photos and reading the posts of friends, and playing mobile games. Guilty? I know you are!

Multitasking

While multi-tasking may seem to be the “in” thing among the millennials, I think that it is an unhealthy way of dealing with your work. What I mean is that you need to focus on a certain task and devote time to it until you get results before you jumping into another task.

Failure to make a To-Do-List

We must make a list of what we need to do every day. This way, you can set priorities and know how much time each task would take. Example, it’s a Saturday and you have errands to do. Place on top of your list the simplest tasks or the nearest places where you need to be. Allow enough time for each errand thinking of how far you will be going and consider the traffic, as well.

Procrastination

If you are the kind of person who puts things off most of the time, then you are losing a lot of precious time in your life. Failure to meet deadlines because you just want to stay in bed or prefer to be with friends most of the time can leave you with so many tasks left undone. And when you cram, the quality of your work suffers.

Not setting aside time to relax

I know how we can all get too busy sometimes. But being so busy every day can wear you down. When you push yourself to the limits, you deprive yourself of a balanced life, which can result in poor health.

Having so many choices.

We are fortunate to live in a time where we are given so many opportunities and choices. But the large number of choices may also leave us unable to choose. Find time to scrutinize each choice and list down both its positive and the negative attributes, to know which is the smartest choice.

Time is very valuable. Once it passes it can never come back. I feel sorry for those who don’t seem to value the time that they have now. They lose many opportunities to become better and to achieve more.
