MANILA -- Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said Tuesday 2,068 companies reported closures during the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in 69,000 job losses.

Overseas, around 321,000 Filipino workers were displaced because of the crisis, of which over 191,000 do not want to return to the Philippines, Bello said.

Official data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that in the 3-month period ended April, unemployment surged to a record 17.7 percent, bloating the total number of jobless Filipinos to 7.3 million.

The labor department granted a one-time P5,000 financial assistance to workers with reduced or no income due to the pandemic.
