MANILA - Established technology companies or "incumbents" have begun to acquire smaller rivals or "disruptors," when these startups are not merging with each other, IBM Philippines said Monday.

"What you see happening is a cyclical nature of how these things come about," IBM Philippines chairman and CEO Luis Pineda said.

Disruptors like Uber recently ceded China to Didi Chuxing and Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, to Grab.

Technology incumbents can help smaller companies harness artificial intelligence and blockchain, he said.
