MANILA - The Senate is trying to approve as early as Monday a measure that seeks to raise excise taxes on cigarettes, a lawmaker said.

The chamber's version of the "sin tax "bill aims to raise the "sin tax" to P60 per pack, higher than P45 in the House of Representatives version.

(We are trying to pass the measure today since it will be helpful for government programs, especially the Universal Healthcare Act)

Finance Assistant Secretary Tony Lambino earlier said collections from the measure would be used to help fund the Universal Healthcare Act.
