MANILA - Good leaders usher their team to ethical growth in an age where innovations at times outpace policy-making, an executive of global cosmetics brand L'Oreal has said.
With the fast-paced growth of companies today, lawmakers are finding it difficult to catch up, and so it is up to business leaders to promote values in the workplace, L'Oreal chief ethics officer Emmanuel Lulin told Cathy Yang in an exclusive interview for ANC's The Boss.
"Today on a number of subjects, the law is late, insufficient and sometimes inexistent. This is the case for instance, for biotechnology, for big data, for artificial intelligence. The law is not fast enough," Lulin said.
"A boss should be an honest leader and raise a culture where members of the organization, instead of obeying the rules, agree to values... In the absence of law, you make decisions according to your values," Lulin added.
L'Oreal is one of few companies that employ an ethics expert as part of its management, a practice that should be observed on a larger scale, Lulin said.
