MANILA - Authorities on Wednesday, Labor Day, signed an agreement aimed at tightening regulations on the issuance of special work permits to foreign nationals, the country's immigration chief said.

Aside from updating rules for the issuance of work permits, foreign nationals will also be required to show proof of taxes paid, Immigration commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.

The Department of Immigration, the Department of Labor and Employment, the Department of Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Justice signed the joint guidelines, he said.

Morente said the influx of foreign workers due to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) is one of the reasons cited for the "shift in policy."

Previous regulations in the issuance of special work permits did not have restrictions aside from duration, he said.

"The old system was prone to abuse, hence we saw the need to tighten our regulations to ensure that jobs that can be done by Filipinos will not be given to foreigners," he said.

Morente said the BI was also "in constant talks" with the DOLE to craft new policies "to ensure the protection of the Filipino worker."

"The procedures are simple, the process is now quicker, so there’s really no excuse for foreign nationals to not follow," he added.

The immigration chief also pledged to get "rid of all illegal aliens who disregard immigration laws."-- with a report from Michael Navallo, ABS-CBN News
