MANILA- The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) said Wednesday it would release the pension of its members earlier than scheduled for the month of May as the coronavirus crisis persists.

GSIS President Rolando Macasaet said crediting of pension will be on May 5, instead of the usual 8th day of the month.

"Sa May 5 po, ire-release din namin po nang mas maaga yung pension ng mga miyembro ng GSIS," he said in a virtual press briefing.

Last month, the GSIS also released the pension earlier than scheduled.

Macasaet had said that the state pension fund has allotted P5.7 billion for the monthly pension of some 511,000 pensioners nationwide.

The Philippines placed Metro Manila and many other areas across the country under enhanced community quarantine to slow the spread of the COVID-19.

The disease, which first emerged in China late last year, has sickened nearly 8,000 in the Philippines, as of April 28. Of those, 975 have recovered while 530 died.
