MANILA - AirAsia said Tuesday its cabin crew would wear "red hot" personal protective equipment for local and international flights as a shield against COVID-19 once flying resumes.

Custom designed by Puey Quiñones, the suits are made of breathable yet sturdy materials while ensuring mobility, said AirAsia Philippines vice chair and majority stakeholder Sheila Romero.

Romero said the fabric used was approved by the Department of Health.

"I like that it’s chic and sporty--similar to what F1 race car drivers wear. This fusion of fashion and safety will define the new standards of flying today,” Romero added. Romero said.

“The PPE is comfortable because it is not too thick and heavy yet it serves its purpose. The material gives justice to the design," she added.

The new PPEs were worn by flight crew that serviced a recovery flight to Manila from Bangkok last April 24, the airline said.

Philippines Airlines also introduced its own PPE for cabin crew bearing its colors that also represent the Philippine flag.
