MANILA - Customers of ride-hailing service Grab will soon be able to use the app's mobile wallet GrabPay to pay for tickets at SM cinemas, the transport company said Wednesday.

Moviegoers can pay SM Cinema tickets using GrabPay by scanning the QR code available in ticketing booths, or through the SM Cinema website for advanced bookings, Grab said.

GrabPay will rollout in select SM Cinemas in Metro Manila and Cebu this April, and will be available nationwide by the end of 2019.

The partnership promotes "a way for mallgoers to enjoy a convenient and rewarding way to pay," SMIC assistant vice president Wence Wenceslao said.

It will also be integrated into various SM group network and services in the coming months, Wenceslao said.

Users of the mobile wallet will be able to top-up GrabPay across the SM group's network such as BDO, SM Business Centers and 2GO outlets.

The partnership expands the application of GrabPay, which is currently used in transport and delivery services, Grab country manager Brian Cu told reporters.

"What GrabPay does is it drives access to other services," Cu said.

Grab and SM's partnership is "ideal" to drive cashless transactions in the country, Wenceslao said.

Grab is in the position to "build trust and educate users" about cashless payments, said GrabPay managing director for Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia Tyng Huey Ooi.

GrabPay users in the Philippines has grown 130 percent for the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year, Ooi said.

GrabPay will also be integrated to GrabFood by the second quarter of 2019, and for bills payment in the third quarter this year.
